A new kidney dialysis unit.

The open-plan unit has 29 haemodialysis stations, either in four or two-station bays. It also has four single rooms. Each station has a ceiling-mounted television. Patients helped design the facility, and will be consulted on artwork which is set to include nature scenes and poetry.

As well as providing on-site dialysis, the unit will train people in home dialysis and prepare them for transplants.

It is hoped the 'satellite unit' will be the first of several run by the hospital across the region, which could be based in Ivybridge and Launceston. The aim is to cut down travel times for patients. The space vacated by the renal unit at Derriford is expected to be used by Royal Eye Infirmary services.
